After braces come off, teeth tend to drift back. A retainer prevents that relapse, and wear continues for years on a gradually reducing schedule.
Orthodontic treatment does not end the day the braces come off. The bone and ligament around the teeth have not yet settled into the new arrangement and still pull the teeth back toward where they started. A retainer holds them in place. Without one, crowding can begin to return within months.
Why teeth drift back
The fibres of the periodontal ligament are stretched during movement and take far longer to reorganise than the teeth take to move. Add the daily pressure of tongue, lips and chewing muscles, and the fact that jaws keep changing very slowly throughout life, and the tendency to relapse becomes constant rather than temporary.
Types of retainer
- Fixed retainer: a thin wire bonded behind the teeth, invisible and requiring no cooperation
- Clear vacuum formed retainer: custom made, thin and barely affects speech
- Traditional acrylic and wire retainer: durable and adjustable
- A combination, often fixed below and removable above
How long and on what schedule
Wear is reduced gradually. Removable retainers are worn most of the day at first, then at night only, and later on a few nights each week. Fixed retainers can stay bonded for years. Rotated teeth, closed extraction spaces and expanded arches need support for longer. In practice, the answer is: for as long as you want the result to hold.
Looking after it
- Clean removable retainers with cool water and a soft brush
- Never use hot water, which distorts the appliance
- Always store it in its case, never wrapped in a napkin
- Use floss threaders around a fixed retainer
- Report a broken fixed wire without waiting
If it is lost or broken
Every day without a retainer allows a little movement, and after a few weeks the old appliance may no longer fit. Book within the same week rather than waiting. If a fixed wire is digging into the gum, urgent orthodontic care may be needed.
Retention is part of every case, whether the treatment was fixed braces or clear aligners. Retainer checks and replacements are available at our Muratpaşa clinic every day of the week, at any hour.
