Language, Consent and Records for International Patients
Transferring information correctly matters as much as the clinical work.
What informed consent means
Informed consent rests on the patient understanding what will be done, why, what the alternatives are, the possible risks, and what happens if nothing is done — the last two are often skipped. If the language of the form is not understood, the consent loses its function, so the content is explained in a language the patient understands, questions are answered and interpreting support is arranged where needed.
Information to prepare before the appointment
- Chronic conditions and previous operations
- Active ingredient names and doses of your medicines
- Use of blood thinners or bone medication
- Known drug and latex allergies
- Pregnancy status and breastfeeding
- Radiographs and reports from previous dental treatment
- Any implant card or prosthesis information
The records you are given afterwards
Once treatment is complete, which procedures were done on which teeth, the materials used, the implant system and size where relevant, the radiographs taken and the prescription are all recorded, and you receive a copy. The reason is continuity: for a patient who spends part of the year in another country, a dentist there can make better decisions with this information. Brand names differ between countries while active ingredient names do not, so keeping the records digitally on your phone is the most practical approach.
Getting Here, Booking and Emergencies from Side
Route, booking and emergency arrangements for patients from Side.
Getting here from Side
Side lies in the Manavgat district of Antalya; Manavgat is a coastal tourism district, about 75 kilometres from the clinic. We also see patients from neighbouring areas that share the route from Side, such as Örnek, Sarılar, Şişeler, Uzunlar. You can ask for the location on WhatsApp when travelling from Side.
Appointments for Side
Because a trip from Side takes a day, the schedule for staged treatment is drawn up at the outset and given to you as a whole. As with patients from Manavgat generally, appointments for families from Side can be scheduled consecutively.
Emergencies from Side
Always call before setting out from Side at night; over this distance the guidance you receive on the phone matters in keeping the situation from worsening. For patients coming from Dental Clinic in Side, the clinic is open 24/7 and in an emergency the order is set by severity rather than arrival time. For spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or toothache with fever, go to the nearest emergency department.
Root Resorption: A Silent Loss of Tissue
A tooth root can be dissolved by the body's own cells. Because it causes no pain it is usually discovered incidentally on a radiograph taken for another reason.
Two main forms
They are distinguished by where they begin, and treated differently:
- Internal resorption: from inside the canal outward, usually after trauma
- External resorption: from the root surface inward
- Resorption at the apex: from long-standing inflammation
- Cervical resorption: at gum level, also seen after internal bleaching
Causes
The commonest triggers are trauma, excessive force during orthodontic treatment, pressure from an impacted tooth on an adjacent root, and long-standing apical inflammation. In some cases no cause is found. Slight root shortening during orthodontics is common and usually causes no problem; marked resorption calls for the force to be reviewed.
Why early detection is critical
As resorption advances the load-bearing structure of the root weakens and beyond a point the tooth cannot be saved. Removing the cause early can arrest the process; in advanced cases the only option is extraction and an implant. This is why interim radiographs are taken during orthodontic treatment and teeth that have suffered trauma are followed for years.
