The Difference Between a Dental Hospital, a Health Centre and a Private Clinic
These three names are licence classes, not a quality ranking. The difference decides which procedures may be carried out and how care is delivered. You do not need a hospital for a routine filling, just as a private clinic is not the right address for surgery that must be done under general anaesthesia.
Oral and dental health hospital
An establishment able to admit patients, with an operating theatre and general anaesthesia. Extraction under general anaesthesia, advanced jaw surgery, management of widespread infection and treatment of patients with disabilities or who cannot cooperate all fall here. In Antalya this is provided mainly by public institutions and the university dental faculty.
Oral and dental health centre
A unit providing outpatient diagnosis and treatment with a large team, mostly public, with appointments through the national booking system. Its scope largely overlaps with a polyclinic's. The visible differences are appointment pressure and opening hours: outside office hours and at weekends, service is usually limited.
Private dental clinic or polyclinic
Covers most procedures that can be done on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic: fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, implants, dentures, orthodontics, gum treatment and aesthetic work. Appointments are made directly with the establishment. Opening hours vary; ours is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Single practice and university faculty
A single practice is one dentist working in their own name, with the narrowest scope. A university dental faculty is a teaching institution and the address for advanced or rare cases, though procedure times and waiting lists there are usually long.
Where Should You Go for What?
What decides is not the name of the establishment but your own situation. The distinction below works in practice and gets you to the right address first time.
When to go straight to hospital A&E
These signs go beyond what a dental clinic can handle. Do not wait and do not stop at a dental clinic — go to the nearest emergency department:
- Swelling spreading to the eyelid, the neck or the floor of the mouth
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- High fever, shivering, feeling generally unwell
- Being unable to open the mouth two fingers wide
- Suspected jaw fracture, or a dental injury with loss of consciousness or head trauma
- Severe bleeding that does not stop despite pressure
When a private dental clinic is the right address
Pain, an abscess, a broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, bleeding gums, bleeding after an extraction, a poking orthodontic wire, a broken denture and sensitivity starting at night — all of these are resolved on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic. Night or weekend is not an obstacle; the only obstacle is finding somewhere open at that hour.
When general anaesthesia is needed
Removing several impacted teeth in one session, comprehensive treatment for children or patients with disabilities who cannot cooperate, and advanced jaw surgery may require general anaesthesia. That falls to a hospital. If such a need is identified after examination, it is explained to you with its reasons and you are referred; presenting a procedure as possible when it is not puts the patient at risk.
Nights and Weekends: The Type of Establishment Is Not the Real Issue
For someone waking at midnight with toothache, the question is not hospital or clinic but whether they can reach somewhere open and equipped at that hour. There is no regularly published on-call roster for dentists as there is for pharmacies, so searching for an 'on-call dentist' in practice means 'somewhere open right now'.
What to do with a dental problem at night
First stabilise the situation, then call:
- For bleeding, apply firm pressure with clean gauze for 15-20 minutes without interruption
- For swelling, apply cold to the OUTSIDE of the cheek; heat spreads the infection
- Keep the fragment of a broken tooth; bring a knocked-out tooth in milk
- Swallow the painkiller — placing a tablet on the tooth causes a chemical burn
- Call before you set out: you get guidance and preparation is done while you travel
How our clinic works at night
We have no closing time: we are open at every hour including nights, weekends and public holidays, and we do not operate a rotating duty system. The panoramic radiography unit is available at all hours, which matters because most emergency decisions are made from the image rather than the examination alone. In an emergency the order is set by severity, not arrival time.
Oral and Dental Health Providers in Antalya
Public, university and private providers all operate in Antalya. Which you approach depends on your situation and on timing, and considering the two together is the most practical approach.
Public and university providers
Public oral and dental health centres and hospital dental clinics work by appointment and are covered by social security. The university dental faculty is the referral address for advanced cases. Their strength is scope and cost; their limits are waiting times and access outside office hours.
Private providers, and where we fit
Our clinic is a private oral and dental health establishment in Muratpaşa, Antalya. It is not a hospital and does not present itself as one. It covers all procedures that can be carried out on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic, is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and accepts patients from all 19 districts of Antalya. If a procedure outside that scope is needed, you are told plainly. Details of the establishment are published on the imprint page.
