Ataturk is one of Kepez's residential neighbourhoods.

This page is about something most people either skip or do wrongly: flossing. It goes wrong because the job is assumed to be removing trapped food, when the real aim is wiping plaque from the surfaces where two teeth touch.

Why a brush cannot do this is simple geometry: bristles cannot enter between two contacting surfaces, so even careful brushing leaves roughly a third of the tooth untouched.

Correct Flossing Technique and Where the Brush Cannot Reach

Used correctly, floss cleans the third of the tooth a brush never reaches.

The correct technique step by step

  • Take about forty centimetres and wind the ends on your middle fingers
  • Keep about one and a half centimetres taut between thumb and index
  • Pass the contact point with a gentle back-and-forth motion
  • Curve the floss into a C against one tooth surface
  • Slide gently one to two millimetres into the gum sulcus
  • Sweep up and down, then repeat on the other surface of the same gap
  • Use a clean length of floss for every gap

The three commonest mistakes

First, snapping the floss down through the contact, which cuts the gum and makes people give up. Move it gently back and forth instead. Second, keeping the floss straight and only moving it up and down, which never touches the contact surface. Third, cleaning one side of a gap and moving on — every gap has two surfaces.

Bleeding and other tools

Mild bleeding in the first days usually indicates existing inflammation rather than damage, and settles within weeks as the gums recover; persistent bleeding should be assessed. Where gums have receded or bridges, implants or braces are present, interdental brushes of the right size work better, and a water flosser supports rather than replaces cleaning.

Getting Here, Booking and Emergencies from Ataturk

Route, booking and emergency arrangements for patients from Ataturk.

Getting here from Ataturk

Atatürk lies in the Kepez district of Antalya; Kepez is one of the central districts, about 6 kilometres from the clinic. We also see patients from neighbouring areas that share the route from Ataturk, such as Yeşilyurt, Altınova Düden, Barış, Duacı. You can ask for the location on WhatsApp when travelling from Ataturk.

Appointments for Ataturk

At this distance, splitting treatment into visits is no problem for patients from Atatürk, and attending reviews is easy too. As with patients from Kepez generally, appointments for families from Ataturk can be scheduled consecutively.

Emergencies from Ataturk

Setting out from Atatürk at night is quick; come without delay in an emergency, and calling as you leave means preparation is done in advance. For patients coming from Dental Clinic in Ataturk, the clinic is open 24/7 and in an emergency the order is set by severity rather than arrival time. For spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or toothache with fever, go to the nearest emergency department.

Why Teeth Become Sensitive and How It Settles

The short sharp pain felt with cold, sweetness or brushing comes from exposed dentine. Dentine contains thousands of microscopic tubules that open directly towards the nerve.

How dentine becomes exposed

There are two routes, and their treatments differ:

  • Through the enamel: erosion, wear or a fracture thins it
  • Through the root: recession exposes the root, which has no enamel
  • A micro-gap at the margin of a restoration
  • Temporary opening of the tubules after whitening

How desensitising toothpaste works

Two mechanisms are used: some products occlude the tubules and block fluid movement, others raise the nerve's threshold. Both work cumulatively; no result is expected from a single use, but with regular use there is a marked reduction within two to four weeks. Rubbing the paste onto the sensitive area with a finger after brushing, without rinsing, increases the effect.

When sensitivity signals something else

Pain that continues after the stimulus is removed, starts on its own, worsens at night or concentrates on one tooth is not simple sensitivity and may indicate the pulp is affected. A sharp pain on biting suggests cracked tooth syndrome. These three presentations need different treatment and are distinguished at examination.

Frequently Asked Questions 17

01

Does sensitivity resolve on its own?

Temporary sensitivity after whitening or scaling resolves within days. Sensitivity from gum recession, however, persists while the cause remains and increases if hard brushing or clenching is not corrected. Whether it resolves therefore depends on the cause.
02

Is sensitivity to cold water a sign of decay?

It can be, but on its own it is not enough to go on. Decay, gum recession, cracks and wear all give similar symptoms. What distinguishes them is how long the pain lasts: if it stops as soon as the stimulus is removed it is usually dentine sensitivity; if it lingers for seconds the pulp may be involved.
03

Is a filling used for a sensitive tooth?

If there is loss of tooth substance at the root, yes: wedge-shaped defects are filled with composite and the sensitivity usually eases at once. Where there is no loss, a filling is not needed; fluoride varnish and a desensitising paste are enough. An unnecessary filling costs sound tissue.
04

What if sensitivity increases after a filling?

It is expected to fade over the first days. If it increases there are two possibilities: the filling is high in the bite and the tooth is strained at every bite, or the pulp has been affected by deep decay. The first is solved by a short adjustment; do not postpone it, because a tooth under constant strain can progress to the second.
05

I brush well — do I really need floss?

A brush reaches the outer, inner and biting surfaces but not where two teeth touch — where much decay and gum inflammation starts. Interdental cleaning completes brushing rather than replacing it.
06

My gums bleed when I floss — should I stop?

Usually not: early bleeding signals inflammation and settles within weeks. Faulty technique also causes it — pass the floss with a gentle sawing motion. Persistent bleeding needs assessment.
07

How do I reach the clinic from here?

Our clinic is in Muratpasa and is reached from Atatürk (Kepez) by city transport; call for directions or use the map on our contact page.
08

Can I come without an appointment?

In an emergency, yes — you are seen without an appointment for pain, swelling, bleeding, a broken tooth or trauma, and the order is set by how serious the problem is rather than by arrival time. For planned treatment, calling ahead means the dentist, the chair and the time your procedure needs are reserved for you, so you are not kept waiting.
09

Are you open at night and at weekends?

Yes. The clinic has no closing time: it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that includes night hours, Saturdays and Sundays, and public holidays. There is no rota to check and no need to ask which day we are on duty. The telephone line is open at the same hours, so you can describe your situation before setting out.
10

I am looking for a dentist in Atatürk — where should I come?

Our clinic is on Sair Adem Dede Street in Muratpasa and serves the Atatürk area, open 24/7. Call ahead for planned treatment; walk in for an emergency.
11

How should I plan my appointment coming from Atatürk?

Tell us how many procedures you need and how much time you have. For patients from Atatürk we combine as much as possible into one visit.
12

Is there a dental clinic open evenings and weekends near Atatürk?

Our clinic has no closing time — evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays included. If you work shifts you can set the appointment around your own schedule.
13

Can our family be treated on the same day from Atatürk?

Yes. Tell us how many are coming and what each needs; appointments are scheduled consecutively so the household is seen in one visit.
14

Which dental problems are most common in the Atatürk area?

The difference between areas is not the type of problem but when people come. Decay, gum disease and missing teeth are the commonest everywhere.
15

Can I come at night from Atatürk in an emergency?

Yes, the clinic is open at night as well. Calling as you set out helps in two ways: you receive first-aid guidance on the telephone, and the radiograph and surgery are made ready while you travel, so you are not kept waiting when you arrive. Do not wait until morning if there is swelling spreading across the face, difficulty swallowing or a fever — those signs need to be seen straight away.
16

Does the information on this page apply across Kepez?

The clinical information is the same everywhere; only travel and scheduling differ. You can find your own area's page in our area guide.
17

What should I be careful about when picking up a knocked-out tooth?

Hold the tooth only by its upper part. Touching the root surface damages the living ligament cells there and reduces the chance of reattachment. Do not brush it, clean it with soap or alcohol, dry it, or wrap it in tissue; drying is the biggest enemy. Beyond a brief rinse, leave it alone and place it in a suitable liquid straight away.
