Interdental Cleaning: Floss, Brushes and Water Flossers
The question is not which one wins, but which one fits your spaces.
Why a brush alone is not enough
Bristles physically cannot enter the narrow space below the contact point, so plaque there stays for days, first inflaming the gum and then starting decay. Interproximal decay is noticed late: the visible surface looks sound, nothing shows in a mirror and it usually does not hurt. Early on it appears only on a bitewing radiograph; by the time it is obvious, a large cavity has formed inside the tooth.
What each of the three actually does
- Floss: cleans below the contact in tight and normal spaces
- Interdental brush: clearly more effective where the space is wider
- Choose the largest size that enters without forcing
- Water flosser: removes food debris and loose plaque
- It is especially useful around bridges, implants and braces
- Superfloss is designed for the space beneath a bridge pontic
- Whichever you use, once a day and regularly is what counts
Order, technique and realistic expectations
Cleaning between the teeth before brushing lets the fluoride in the paste reach those surfaces. Pass the floss through the contact, wrap it in a C around the side of the tooth and move it just below the gum — simply pushing it down and out cleans nothing. Slight bleeding in the first days is normal, a sign of inflamed gums, and settles within weeks with regular use; if it persists it should be assessed. Note that a water flosser does not fully replace floss: water cannot shear off the sticky plaque layer, though it does reduce gum bleeding.
Getting Here, Booking and Emergencies from Altinkale
Route, booking and emergency arrangements for patients from Altinkale.
Getting here from Altinkale
Altınkale lies in the Döşemealtı district of Antalya; Döşemealtı is an outlying district near the centre, about 18 kilometres from the clinic. We also see patients from neighbouring areas that share the route from Altinkale, such as Akkoç, Camili, Ilıcaköy, Kömürcüler. You can ask for the location on WhatsApp when travelling from Altinkale.
Appointments for Altinkale
If you say you are coming from Altınkale when you book, procedures are combined and examination, radiographs and treatment are usually completed the same day. As with patients from Dosemealti generally, appointments for families from Altinkale can be scheduled consecutively.
Emergencies from Altinkale
Coming from Altınkale at night is quicker than by day once the roads clear; call as you set out and you will receive first-aid guidance on the phone. For patients coming from Dental Clinic in Altinkale, the clinic is open 24/7 and in an emergency the order is set by severity rather than arrival time. For spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or toothache with fever, go to the nearest emergency department.
How Fluoride Protects, and How Much Is Enough
Fluoride's effect cannot be summed up simply as 'hardening' the tooth. The enamel surface is in constant balance between dissolution and remineralisation: acid dissolves, saliva puts minerals back. Fluoride shifts that balance towards remineralisation, and the crystal that forms is more resistant to acid.
Surface contact matters more than swallowing
Fluoride works mainly while in contact with the tooth surface; systemic intake adds little once the teeth have erupted. How long the paste stays in the mouth therefore matters: spitting out the excess without rinsing thoroughly keeps fluoride on the surface. Not eating or drinking for a while afterwards serves the same purpose.
Fluoride content and age
For adults a standard toothpaste is sufficient; where the risk of decay is high, a dentist may recommend a higher-fluoride product. In children the amount is adjusted by age: a smear the size of a grain of rice for the youngest, a pea-sized amount for pre-school children. This measure exists to limit how much is swallowed.
Fluoride applied at the clinic
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the tooth as a thin layer and releases fluoride over several hours. It is particularly effective in patients with early lesions, those in orthodontic treatment, those with dry mouth and those with exposed root surfaces. The application is brief, needs no anaesthetic and is easily done in children.
White spots: decay that can be arrested
Chalky white spots on the enamel are early lesions where no cavity has yet formed. At this stage no filling is needed: with fluoride support, interdental cleaning and less frequent sugar, the lesion can be arrested and the surface can even re-harden. That window closes once a cavity has formed.
