Dokuma is one of Kepez's long-established residential neighbourhoods with a young population.

This page covers the longest yet least discussed stage of orthodontic treatment: the fixed retainer. Removing the braces does not end treatment — the thin wire holding the teeth in place stays in the mouth for years in most patients.

The wire itself is harmless; the difficulty is cleaning around it. Bonded to the back of the front teeth, it blocks floss from passing the usual way, and without the right technique that area becomes a site where calculus and gum inflammation collect.

How to Clean a Fixed Retainer

With a bonded retainer, the difficulty is not brushing but cleaning between the teeth.

Why ordinary floss is not enough

Floss is normally passed down between two teeth, but a bonded retainer cuts across exactly that path on the inner surface, so the floss catches on the wire. The answer is to pass it horizontally underneath the wire, using superfloss with a stiff end or a threader. Once it is through, the floss is moved up and down against both tooth surfaces. Skip this and brushing cleans only the visible side of the wire, leaving the plaque on the side facing the gum.

The daily routine

  • Thread the floss under the wire; do not force it from above
  • Move it against each adjacent tooth surface separately
  • The finest interdental brush works well under the wire
  • Angle the brush onto the inner surface of the front teeth
  • A water flosser helps but does not replace floss
  • Check the wire with your tongue once a month

What happens if the wire debonds

A retainer is usually bonded to each tooth separately, so when one point debonds the wire stays in place and most patients never notice — which is the real problem. The freed tooth can be slowly rotated by the wire still held by its neighbours, and this drift is harder to correct than the original crowding. If your tongue finds a rough spot, floss catches unexpectedly or a front tooth looks different, have it checked; rebonding is a short visit.

Getting Here, Booking and Emergencies from Dokuma

Route, booking and emergency arrangements for patients from Dokuma.

Getting here from Dokuma

Dokuma lies in the Kepez district of Antalya; Kepez is one of the central districts, about 6 kilometres from the clinic. We also see patients from neighbouring areas that share the route from Dokuma, such as Yükseliş, Altınova Orta, Barış, Duacı. You can ask for the location on WhatsApp when travelling from Dokuma.

Appointments for Dokuma

At this distance, splitting treatment into visits is no problem for patients from Dokuma, and attending reviews is easy too. As with patients from Kepez generally, appointments for families from Dokuma can be scheduled consecutively.

Emergencies from Dokuma

Setting out from Dokuma at night is quick; come without delay in an emergency, and calling as you leave means preparation is done in advance. For patients coming from Dental Clinic in Dokuma, the clinic is open 24/7 and in an emergency the order is set by severity rather than arrival time. For spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or toothache with fever, go to the nearest emergency department.

Laminate Veneers: Why the Preparation Stage Is Critical

A porcelain veneer is thin and fragile and gains its strength only once bonded to the tooth. The result therefore depends as much on how the tooth beneath is prepared as on the porcelain itself.

How much tooth is removed

Usually 0.3 to 0.7 mm — that is, part of the enamel thickness. The critical point is that the preparation stays within enamel. The adhesive bonds very strongly to enamel, whereas the bond to dentine is markedly weaker. Where preparation reaches dentine the veneer eventually leaks at the margin and the risk of debonding rises. Where the preparation stops matters as much as how much is removed.

Can it be done without any preparation?

In some cases yes, and it is then preferred — but it does not suit every mouth. What determines suitability:

  • Where teeth are set back or small, no preparation may be needed
  • Where teeth protrude, no preparation adds bulk and looks thick
  • On a dark tooth thin porcelain cannot mask the colour and preparation is needed
  • Aligning the teeth orthodontically first reduces the need to prepare

The trial stage: the mock-up

Before any preparation the planned shape can be applied over the teeth in a temporary material. The patient sees the result in their own mouth, speaks, smiles and can ask for changes. This stage is the last checkpoint before an irreversible step and largely removes the dissatisfaction that comes from mismatched expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions 17

01

How many years do veneers last?

Ten to fifteen years and beyond with good care. The main things that shorten it are clenching, biting hard food with the front teeth, and gum recession. A night guard markedly extends the lifespan in patients who clench and is advised in almost every case.
02

What happens if a veneer comes off?

If it comes off intact it can be cleaned and rebonded. If it has fractured a new one is made; since the tooth has been prepared it cannot be left without one. Keep the piece and do not bite with that tooth. Debonding usually has a cause, and that cause must be addressed too.
03

How many teeth should be veneered?

It is decided by how many teeth show when you smile, which for most people covers 8 to 10. Veneering only the two front teeth makes colour and shape matching difficult, because the comparison with the natural neighbours sits right beside it. The decision follows the smile line.
04

How should veneers be cared for?

Ordinary brushing and flossing are enough; avoid abrasive pastes. Habits such as cracking shells, biting nails and snapping thread with the front teeth must stop. Gum health matters particularly, because recession makes the veneer margin visible.
05

How long should a fixed retainer stay?

It varies and is usually long term, sometimes indefinite, depending on the original crowding and the tendency to relapse. While it stays, regular checks are needed.
06

The wire has made my teeth sensitive — is that normal?

The wire itself does not cause sensitivity. Plaque in an area that cannot be cleaned leads to gum inflammation and recession, and the exposed root reacts to cold.
07

How do I reach the clinic from here?

Our clinic is in Muratpasa and is reached from Dokuma (Kepez) by city transport; call for directions or use the map on our contact page.
08

Can I come without an appointment?

In an emergency, yes — you are seen without an appointment for pain, swelling, bleeding, a broken tooth or trauma, and the order is set by how serious the problem is rather than by arrival time. For planned treatment, calling ahead means the dentist, the chair and the time your procedure needs are reserved for you, so you are not kept waiting.
09

Are you open at night and at weekends?

Yes. The clinic has no closing time: it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that includes night hours, Saturdays and Sundays, and public holidays. There is no rota to check and no need to ask which day we are on duty. The telephone line is open at the same hours, so you can describe your situation before setting out.
10

I am looking for a dentist in Dokuma — where should I come?

Our clinic is on Sair Adem Dede Street in Muratpasa and serves the Dokuma area, open 24/7. Call ahead for planned treatment; walk in for an emergency.
11

How should I plan my appointment coming from Dokuma?

Tell us how many procedures you need and how much time you have. For patients from Dokuma we combine as much as possible into one visit.
12

Is there a dental clinic open evenings and weekends near Dokuma?

Our clinic has no closing time — evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays included. If you work shifts you can set the appointment around your own schedule.
13

Can our family be treated on the same day from Dokuma?

Yes. Tell us how many are coming and what each needs; appointments are scheduled consecutively so the household is seen in one visit.
14

Which dental problems are most common in the Dokuma area?

The difference between areas is not the type of problem but when people come. Decay, gum disease and missing teeth are the commonest everywhere.
15

Can I come at night from Dokuma in an emergency?

Yes, the clinic is open at night as well. Calling as you set out helps in two ways: you receive first-aid guidance on the telephone, and the radiograph and surgery are made ready while you travel, so you are not kept waiting when you arrive. Do not wait until morning if there is swelling spreading across the face, difficulty swallowing or a fever — those signs need to be seen straight away.
16

Does the information on this page apply across Kepez?

The clinical information is the same everywhere; only travel and scheduling differ. You can find your own area's page in our area guide.
17

My child's baby tooth was knocked out. Can we put that one back in too?

No, a knocked-out baby tooth is not put back. Pushing it into the socket can damage the developing permanent tooth bud underneath. The child should still be seen the same day so neighbouring teeth, gum injuries and the jawbone can be checked. If needed, a space maintainer and regular follow-up are planned.
