What You Are Asked on the Phone, and Why
A few short questions decide how the journey goes and what happens at the clinic.
The questions you will be asked
- When did it start and how long has it gone on
- Does the pain start on its own or with a stimulus
- Is there facial or gum swelling, or fever
- If bleeding, how long has it lasted and does pressure slow it
- Was there a blow or fall, and has a tooth moved
- What medicines do you take and do you have a chronic illness
- When can you set out and who will drive
What the questions are for
First, urgency. Spontaneous throbbing and sensitivity that passes with the stimulus point to different stages, while swelling, fever and difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing call for priority. That tells you whether to set out at once.
Second, preparation. The setup is completed while you travel, with the likely radiograph and procedure known in advance, so you do not wait on arrival. Third, safety: your medicines, chronic conditions, allergies and any pregnancy shape both the anaesthetic and anything prescribed.
What you are told on the phone
No diagnosis is made by phone — that comes from the examination and the radiograph. What you are given is what to do and avoid until you arrive: how to apply pressure to bleeding, a cold compress for swelling, carrying a knocked-out tooth in milk, never placing a tablet on the tooth and avoiding heat.
You are also told what to bring: the fragment, a lost crown or denture, your medicine list, ID and previous radiographs. Where the journey is long, we discuss what can be completed in a single visit, so you know what to expect before you leave.
