Why a 24-Hour Dental Clinic Is Needed
Dental emergencies cluster outside working hours, for both physiological and behavioural reasons.
Why pain becomes unbearable at night
The pulp sits in a closed space; when inflamed it swells with nowhere to expand, and lying down raises the pressure further.
Trauma happens outside office hours
Sports injuries, teeth broken at dinner, children falling while playing and night-time accidents almost all occur after clinics close, and in trauma cases time directly determines the outcome.
The only feasible time for workers and visitors
For people working full days, shift workers and those in tourism, office hours mean taking leave. Visitors on holiday likewise often need evening or night care.
Which Dental Treatments Are Possible at Night?
In emergencies the priority is controlling pain and infection. All of the following are available at night.
Panoramic X-ray and diagnosis
Most emergencies cannot be diagnosed without an X-ray, since referred pain is common. A panoramic view shows the whole jaw in a single image.
Emergency root canal treatment
Opening the pulp chamber releases the pressure and most patients feel relief during the procedure. Canals are cleaned and medicated, with definitive work later.
Abscess drainage and infection control
Drainage is the priority; antibiotics are given in addition when needed, never instead.
Urgent extraction
Extraction is the last option. Blood thinners, heart valve disease, diabetes and bone medication are especially important to disclose.
Temporary restoration and bleeding control
Sharp edges can be smoothed and temporarily sealed, lost fillings replaced and crowns re-cemented temporarily; persistent bleeding is controlled and sutured if needed.
What is not done at night
Implant surgery, starting orthodontics, veneers and prosthetic impressions are not emergency procedures; a daytime appointment is arranged.
Which Complaints Can Wait Until Morning?
An always-open clinic does not mean every complaint requires a night visit.
Do not wait until morning
- A permanent tooth knocked completely out
- Rapidly growing facial swelling, especially with fever
- Bleeding that does not stop under pressure
- Pain unresponsive to painkillers that prevents sleep
- Inability to open the mouth or difficulty swallowing
Can be seen in the morning
- Sensitivity that passes within seconds
- A painless lost filling, if the area is kept clean
- A crown that came off without pain
- Mild gum bleeding
- A broken denture, if not worn
Beyond the scope of dentistry
If swelling reaches the eyelid, breathing is difficult, or there was loss of consciousness or suspected jaw fracture, go to a hospital emergency department.
