Planning Before the Decision in Smile Design
Seeing the result in advance is the most important step before consenting to something irreversible.
What a mock-up is and why it matters
A mock-up applies the planned new tooth form over your existing teeth in a temporary material — nothing is cut and it is easily removed. You see the result in your own mouth and face, which differs greatly from an on-screen simulation because it shows real volume, lip support and how it looks while speaking.
A smile is more than teeth
Colour and shape matter, but so do how much gum shows when smiling, the upper lip line, whether the midline matches the face and whether the incisal edges follow the lower lip curve. Sometimes the real issue is the gum level or alignment, not the teeth.
How the process should run
The current state is recorded, the plan made, the mock-up tried, and only after your approval does permanent work begin. The try-in is the last point at which shade, length and form can still be changed — once cemented, usually they cannot.

Bringing an Impacted Canine into the Arch
The canine is the cornerstone of the smile and guides the bite. It is the most commonly impacted tooth after the wisdom teeth — and unlike a wisdom tooth, the aim is to save it, not remove it.
Detecting it early is decisive
The canine normally erupts between 11 and 13. If the baby canine is still present at that age and the permanent tooth cannot be felt, a radiograph is needed. Early on, simply extracting the baby canine can let the impacted tooth find its own way; this is the simplest solution and is only possible if it is noticed in time.
Surgical exposure and orthodontic traction
The process requires two disciplines working together:
- CT establishes the tooth's exact position and its relation to adjacent roots
- The tooth is exposed under the gum and a small attachment is bonded
- It is linked by chain to the orthodontic wire and drawn down slowly over months
- Once in place the gum level can be refined
The risk of waiting
An impacted canine does not only lose its own place; as time passes it can resorb the root of the adjacent lateral incisor. That loss is irreversible and can cost a sound tooth. A cyst can also develop around it. An impacted canine is therefore a finding to be followed even when it causes no pain.
