What to Do as You Set Out and on the Way
In some cases, what happens before you arrive determines whether the tooth can be saved.
A knocked-out tooth — the first 30 minutes
For a permanent tooth, time is the critical factor: the living cells on the root surface die as they dry. Hold it only by the crown, never the root; rinse briefly in milk or saline if dirty and never scrub. Carry it in milk or the patient's own saliva — wrapping it in a dry tissue destroys the chance of saving it. Milk teeth are never replanted.
Bleeding and trauma
For bleeding, bite firmly on clean gauze for 30 to 45 minutes; repeatedly checking disturbs the clot. Mention any blood thinner but never stop it yourself. A changed bite after a blow to the jaw is an important sign.
Swelling and abscess
Never apply heat to swelling — it accelerates the spread of infection. Cold outside the cheek is safe. Do not try to burst it. Swelling spreading across the face or into the neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing and fever are serious.
Common mistakes that cause harm
- Placing a painkiller against the gum, which causes a chemical burn
- Applying a hot compress to swelling
- Gluing a broken crown with household or superglue
- Starting antibiotics without prescription, masking rather than solving
- Wrapping a knocked-out tooth in a dry tissue
- Overloading the other side for days
What to bring with you
- The tooth fragment, lost crown or veneer
- A list of your regular medication, or the boxes
- The name and dose of any blood thinner
- Any allergies, especially to antibiotics
- Previous radiographs and treatment reports
- Details of heart valves, joint replacements or diabetes
Single-Visit Treatment for Patients from Gundogmus
The same principle applies to planned treatment: complete as much as possible on the day you come.
What can be completed the same day
Just say you are travelling from Gundogmus: a long slot is allocated so examination, radiographs and treatment happen the same day.
- Examination, imaging and the treatment plan in one visit
- Several fillings combined with scaling
- A surgical extraction planned with restoration in the same area
- Root canal treatment completed in one visit where suitable
- Composite bonding and aesthetic corrections
- Consecutive treatment for several members of the same household
Scheduling staged treatment
Implants and dentures proceed in stages. We set the dates out in advance, give them together and align them with family members' appointments where possible, so each stage does not mean a separate journey.
Call before you set out
A call clarifies the scope so an appropriately long slot is set aside and preparations are made before you arrive. In an emergency it also tells you what to do on the way.

Telling Apart the Source of Toothache
Toothache does not point to a single condition; how the pain starts, how long it lasts and what makes it worse largely reveal its source.
Sensitivity or Nerve Inflammation?
In sensitivity, pain starts with cold, heat or sweetness and disappears within seconds once the stimulus is removed. It usually involves an exposed root surface, worn enamel or the temporary effect of a recently placed restoration. This picture is generally managed with protective measures and by correcting the brushing technique.
In nerve inflammation, pain begins without any stimulus, lasts for minutes, increases at night when lying down and responds only partly to painkillers. Pain that becomes pronounced with heat and eases temporarily with cold suggests an advanced condition. Because this distinction determines the choice between a filling and root canal treatment, it is supported by thermal and bite tests at the examination.
Abscess and Swelling
When bacteria pass from the root tip into the surrounding tissue, a collection of infection forms. The tooth becomes tender to touch and to biting, and patients often say it feels as though it has grown longer. A small swelling may appear on the gum, and pain can temporarily ease when discharge occurs; this is not recovery.
Swelling spreading to the cheek, below the eye or under the jaw, difficulty opening the mouth, difficulty swallowing, fever and general malaise are findings that require urgent assessment. With these signs, and especially if there is difficulty swallowing or breathing, the nearest hospital emergency department should be attended without delay. Our clinic is also reachable at any hour, including at night.
Findings That Should Be Assessed Without Delay
- Swelling that is growing on the cheek, below the eye or under the jaw
- Difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing
- Toothache accompanied by fever
- A tooth displaced or knocked out after trauma
- Bleeding that does not stop after an extraction
- Pain that persists despite painkillers and wakes you at night
- A mouth sore that has not healed for more than two weeks
Aftercare and the Follow-Up Routine
The success of treatment is determined not only on the day it is carried out but by the care and follow-up that come afterwards.
The First Days After a Filling or Root Canal
Mild sensitivity to cold may last a few days after a filling and usually fades away. However, if discomfort persists at a specific point on biting, the filling is probably high in the bite, and this is corrected with a simple adjustment. Leaving it unadjusted can cause pain and, in time, a crack.
After root canal treatment, tenderness on biting can continue until the tissues around the tooth heal. Hard foods should be avoided during this period until the restoration is completed. If the temporary filling comes out, it should be reported without waiting, as the exposed canal system comes back into contact with bacteria.
Follow-Up After Dentures and Implants
A new denture has an adaptation period. Feeling a difference in speech and chewing in the first days is normal; a sore at a specific point, however, shows that the denture is pressing there and requires adjustment. If the denture is left unworn, the tissues change and adaptation becomes harder still.
The tissues around an implant can become inflamed just as around a natural tooth. The implant itself does not decay, but the bone support around it can be lost as a result of plaque accumulation. Interdental cleaning and regular check-ups are therefore planned as an inseparable part of treatment for implant patients.
The Check-Up Schedule for Patients Travelling In
- Grouping the check-up appointment with other planned procedures on one day
- Making the first assessment by phone when appropriate and turning it into an appointment if needed
- Confirming the appointment before setting off
- Having your previous radiographs and treatment records with you
- Bringing an up-to-date list of the medicines you use
- Planning family members' examinations for the same day
- Contacting the clinic, including at night, if an unexpected complaint arises
For Those Searching for a Dental Polyclinic from Gundogmus
Some patients from Gundogmus search for a 'dental polyclinic' rather than a 'dental clinic'; the difference between the two is a licence class rather than a ranking of quality, and it determines what may be done.
What it means in practice for a patient from Gundogmus
For a patient coming from Gundogmus it means this: surgery, root canal treatment, prosthetics and orthodontics are all carried out at one address, so you do not go to three separate places. Given the distance of about 160 kilometres between Gundogmus and the clinic, that difference directly reduces the number of journeys. The distinction between licence classes is set out in detail on our dental polyclinic page.
