How to Use Desensitising Toothpaste
With this product the result depends on how you use it, not which one you buy.
How it works
Sensitivity appears where enamel has thinned or the root surface is exposed and the dentine tubules open into the mouth; fluid movement in them is signalled to the nerve. These pastes either contain salts that calm the nerve response or components that block the tubule openings. Both effects build up, so the material has to be present repeatedly — one use changes nothing.
Using it correctly
- Use it twice a day, at every brushing
- Continue for at least two to four weeks
- Spit afterwards; do not rinse with plenty of water
- Rub a thin layer onto the sensitive area at night
- Brush with soft bristles and light pressure
- Delay brushing straight after acidic food
What the paste cannot solve
The paste is not a diagnosis; it reduces general sensitivity from exposed dentine. If the complaint persists despite regular use, something else is behind it. Pain focused on one tooth, triggered by biting, lingering for minutes or arising spontaneously belongs elsewhere — decay, a cracked tooth, a leaking filling margin or advanced recession. Whitening and abrasive pastes should also be reviewed.

Inlays and Onlays: Between a Filling and a Crown
In some teeth the loss of structure is too great for a filling but too early for a crown. Inlays and onlays fill exactly that gap: made in the laboratory and bonded in, they require far less tooth reduction than a crown.
The difference between them
An inlay sits within the space between the cusps; an onlay also covers one or more cusps. In that respect an onlay is protective: it bands a cusp that is at risk of cracking and prevents it fracturing. Unlike a crown, the sound walls of the tooth are left untouched.
When it is preferred
Situations where it suits:
- Wide, multi-surface decay, borderline for a composite filling
- Replacing a large old filling that has fractured
- Root-treated teeth with enough wall remaining
- Weakened cusps at risk of cracking
- More durable than composite where there is a clenching habit
How it differs from a composite filling
Composite shrinks slightly as it sets in the mouth, and in large fillings that shrinkage can create micro-gaps at the margin and stress within the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are made and set outside the mouth, that shrinkage happens on the model rather than in the tooth. The contact points and chewing surface are also shaped more precisely in the laboratory.
