Why Do Coffee and Tea Stain Teeth?

Tannins in coffee and tea bind to the thin protein film on enamel. Here is how staining works and which stains actually come off.

Coffee and tea stain teeth because the plant compounds they contain, called tannins, bind to the thin protein film that covers enamel. Enamel looks smooth but is porous at a microscopic scale, and pigments first stick to that saliva-derived film before seeping into the surface.

Surface stain versus internal discolouration

Extrinsic stains build up on the outside and come largely from coffee, tea, red wine, cola and tobacco. They respond well to professional cleaning and polishing. Intrinsic discolouration sits inside the tooth: thinning enamel with age, naturally darkening dentine, colour change after trauma, or marks left by certain medicines during development. Surface cleaning will not remove those.

The distinction matters, because the same yellow appearance calls for different treatment. Where the cause is internal, teeth whitening or restorative options are considered instead.

Why some people stain faster

  • Rough or eroded enamel holds pigment more easily.
  • Plaque and calculus give stain more surface to cling to.
  • A dry mouth loses saliva's washing effect.
  • Tobacco makes stain both darker and more persistent.
  • Composite fillings pick up colour more readily than enamel.

Tea or coffee: which stains more?

Contrary to what many expect, strong tea often stains more than filter coffee because of its high tannin content, and green tea can stain too. Adding milk may reduce staining for some people, since milk proteins bind tannins. Individual results vary with enamel roughness, hygiene and how often you drink.

Practical ways to reduce staining

Rinsing with plain water afterwards shortens the time pigment sits on the surface, and finishing your cup rather than nursing it for hours helps with both stain and acid. Consistent brushing and interdental cleaning stop plaque from forming a base for pigment. Harsh scrubbing and constant use of highly abrasive whitening pastes, on the other hand, thin the enamel and can make teeth look more yellow over time.

One extra note for anyone with composite restorations: whitening agents do not change their colour, so matching the shade in the front of the mouth may require replacing them, which is part of planning for composite bonding.

When to see a dentist

If one single tooth darkens and has a history of impact, the pulp needs assessing rather than the surface. Dark, hard deposits at the gum line are calculus, which brushing cannot remove and which should also be reviewed in the context of gum treatment. Where bleeding gums or bad breath accompany the discolouration, cleaning and gum health come first.
