Laminate veneers are not for every mouth. Here are the situations where they are postponed or replaced by another treatment.
Laminate veneers are thin ceramic shells bonded to the front surface of the teeth. In the right mouth they work beautifully, but they are postponed or replaced by another option when there is active gum inflammation, a significant bite problem, night grinding, too little remaining enamel, or large old fillings on the front surface. Here is what decides suitability.
Gum health comes first
The veneer margin sits next to the gum. If the gum bleeds or is swollen, the margin cannot be recorded accurately, and once the inflammation settles the tissue recedes and exposes the edge. That is why gum treatment is completed before any aesthetic work begins.
Crowding and bite problems
Correcting noticeably crooked teeth with veneers alone means removing more healthy tooth structure than necessary, and that cannot be undone. Aligning the teeth first with orthodontic treatment or, in suitable cases, clear aligners is the more conservative route. A deep bite or edge to edge contact also puts repeated stress on thin ceramic.
Night grinding
Grinding loads teeth in a sideways, sustained way that differs from normal chewing, and thin ceramic is vulnerable to it. Treatment is not ruled out, but a protective night guard becomes part of the plan rather than an optional extra.
When the tooth cannot support a veneer
Veneers bond mainly to enamel. That foundation is insufficient in these situations:
- Advanced enamel wear from reflux, acidic drinks or aggressive brushing
- Front surfaces largely covered by old fillings
- Root treated teeth that are more brittle and discoloured
- Teeth that have lost a large portion of structure through fracture
- Untreated decay
Some of these call for a full coverage restoration instead. Others simply need the foundation rebuilt with a filling first. For small surface defects, composite bonding may be enough on its own.
Age and daily care
In young patients whose gum levels are still changing, reversible options are preferred until things settle. And if brushing and interdental cleaning are not yet routine, plaque will collect at the veneer margin and show up as a gum problem within a few years.
Being unsuitable today is usually a sequencing issue rather than a permanent verdict. An examination, imaging and a smile analysis will tell you which path fits. Our clinic in Muratpasa, Antalya is open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
