Where Does Bad Breath Come From, the Stomach?

Most people blame the stomach for bad breath. In reality the source is almost always inside the mouth itself.

Most bad breath does not come from the stomach. The oesophagus is normally closed, and stomach contents are not carried out with every breath. The smell usually comes from sulphur compounds released when bacteria in the mouth break down protein debris. Wherever those compounds gather is where the solution lies.

The most overlooked source: the tongue

The rough surface at the back of the tongue holds a large amount of bacteria and dead cells. Many people brush their teeth carefully and never touch the tongue. Sweeping it forward a few times with the back of the brush or a tongue cleaner, without pressure, makes a noticeable difference.

Other sources inside the mouth

  • Gum inflammation and bacteria collecting in gum pockets
  • Calculus, whose rough surface constantly harbours bacteria
  • Uncleaned spaces between teeth and food debris left there
  • Deep cavities and cracks in broken teeth
  • Old fillings or crowns with poorly fitting margins
  • Debris under the gum flap of a partly erupted wisdom tooth
  • Removable dentures that are not cleaned thoroughly
  • A dry mouth, where saliva no longer rinses the surfaces

Why dryness matters

Saliva is the mouth's own rinsing system. Flow drops overnight, which is why almost everyone wakes with some odour that disappears after brushing. Dryness that lasts all day, however, may relate to mouth breathing, medication or low fluid intake, and deserves attention.

When to look beyond the mouth

If the mouth is genuinely healthy, the tongue is cleaned and odour still persists, then reflux, chronic sinus problems, post-nasal drip or tonsil stones can contribute. The order matters, though: the mouth is checked first because that is where most cases are resolved.

Getting a lasting result

It starts with an examination, since people rarely see the source in their own mouth. Cleaning, treating inflamed areas and restoring decayed teeth usually change things noticeably. Deep pockets need gum treatment, and broken or cavitated teeth need a dental filling before the odour can settle.

Why rinses are not enough

Products that mask odour do not remove its source and wear off quickly. Sugary mints add decay risk, and alcohol-based rinses can dry the mouth further. Mechanical cleaning and treating the cause do the real work.

Our clinic is in Muratpasa and is open 24 hours a day, every day of the week.
