A brush with splayed bristles cannot remove plaque. Here is when to replace it, how to store it and the mistakes to avoid.
A toothbrush should generally be replaced every three months, but the real measure is the state of the bristles rather than the calendar. Once they splay outward or flatten at the tips, the brush can no longer sweep plaque from the gum line, and brushing for longer does not compensate, because the problem is geometry, not time.
What you lose when bristles deform
New bristles are straight with rounded ends, which lets them reach the gum margin and the small hollows between teeth. Splayed bristles only contact the broad outer surface, so plaque persists exactly where it matters most, and you see bleeding at the gum line despite brushing regularly.
Early deformation is also a warning. If bristles splay well before three months, you are probably pressing too hard, which causes recession and notching at the necks of the teeth rather than better cleaning.
Replace it immediately if
- You have had flu, a throat infection or a feverish illness.
- The brush has been dropped or mixed up with someone else's.
- The bristles splay visibly before three months.
- Your dentist advises it after oral surgery.
- The head has developed lasting discolouration or odour.
Are electric brushes different?
Electric brush heads are smaller and often wear faster, and many have colour indicators that fade as replacement time approaches. Pressure matters here too: the device provides the motion, and pushing harder damages gums while ruining the head quickly.
How to store a toothbrush
Rinse it thoroughly, shake off excess water and stand it upright with the head in the air so it dries quickly. Closed plastic cases are for travel only, since they keep the brush damp. If several brushes share a cup, keep the heads apart, and never share a brush with anyone.
Which firmness?
A soft brush suits most people. Medium and hard bristles do not clean better and raise the risk of recession and enamel abrasion. A small head reaches behind the back teeth more comfortably, and where there is recession or a history of gum treatment, your dentist may suggest a particular firmness and technique.
A brush alone is not enough
A toothbrush reaches only three surfaces of each tooth; the two contacting neighbouring teeth are beyond it, and that is where many cavities and most gum inflammation begin. Daily floss or interdental brushes matter as much as timely replacement. Braces need special brushes around the brackets, worth clarifying at your orthodontic reviews, and a dental bridge needs its own method for cleaning underneath.
