Should Baby Tooth Decay Be Treated? The 'It Will Fall Out Anyway' Myth

Baby tooth decay does need treatment. Until the tooth falls out on its own, decay can cause pain, infection and loss of space for the permanent tooth underneath.

Yes, decay in baby teeth needs to be treated. A primary tooth will eventually fall out, but until that day it does real work: it helps your child chew, shapes speech, and holds space for the permanent tooth developing underneath it. Left alone, decay causes pain, disturbed sleep and infection that can reach the bone.

Baby teeth stay longer than most parents think

Front baby teeth start loosening around age six, but the back primary molars usually stay until somewhere between ten and twelve. A molar that decays at age three still has eight or nine years of service ahead of it. Waiting for the problem to solve itself is rarely realistic.

Why decay moves faster in primary teeth

Enamel and dentine are thinner in baby teeth, and the pulp chamber that holds the nerve is proportionally larger. A cavity that begins on the surface therefore reaches the nerve much sooner than it would in an adult tooth. The gap between a simple filling and root canal treatment can be a matter of months.

What treatment usually looks like

  • Fluoride application and better brushing habits for early white spot lesions
  • Cleaning the cavity and placing a dental filling when decay is limited to enamel and dentine
  • Sealants to protect deep grooves on chewing surfaces
  • Root canal treatment adapted to primary teeth, followed by a stainless steel crown
  • Extraction plus a space maintainer when the tooth cannot be saved

What happens if you wait

Children chew on the other side to avoid pain, which becomes a habit. Night pain interrupts sleep and appetite. If an abscess forms at the root tip, facial swelling can follow and that needs urgent care. Long standing infection may also affect the enamel of the permanent tooth bud sitting right below the root.

Early loss and space maintainers

When a baby tooth is lost too early, neighbouring teeth tip into the gap and the permanent tooth has nowhere to erupt. This is one of the common reasons children later need orthodontic treatment. A simple space maintainer holds the distance until the adult tooth arrives.

White or brown spots, sensitivity to cold and sweets, chewing on one side only, or crying during brushing are all reasons to book an assessment. Our children's dentistry service in Muratpaşa is available every day of the week, around the clock.
