How Is a Gap Between the Front Teeth (Diastema) Closed?

There is more than one way to close a gap between the front teeth. The right method depends on why the gap is there.

A gap between the front teeth is called a diastema, and there is more than one way to close it. A narrow gap between well positioned teeth can be closed with composite in a single visit. A wide gap, tilted teeth, or spacing throughout the arch is better handled by moving the teeth. The cause, not the width, decides the method.

Why gaps appear

  • A mismatch between tooth size and jaw size
  • A band of tissue from the upper lip extending between the teeth
  • Undersized or missing lateral incisors
  • Neighbouring teeth drifting after a tooth is lost
  • Tooth migration linked to gum disease
  • A long standing tongue thrusting habit
  • Effects of childhood habits such as thumb sucking

Closing it with composite

With composite bonding the dentist adds tooth coloured resin to the edges of the teeth. It usually takes one visit, often needs no tooth reduction, and you see the result the same day. The limit is width: close a very wide gap this way and the teeth start to look disproportionate. Composite also picks up colour over time and needs periodic polishing.

Closing it with ceramic

If shape, length or colour are changing as well, thin ceramic shells may suit better. Laminate veneers close the space and rebuild the smile line at once, which is why they are usually considered within a smile design plan. Because the result is permanent, a trial stage before committing matters.

Closing it by moving the teeth

When the gap comes from tooth position, moving the teeth is the most conservative route: nothing is added to or removed from the tooth. Orthodontic treatment can reorganise the whole arch, and in suitable cases clear aligners offer a less visible alternative. It takes longer, but the result is achieved with your own tooth structure.

Whether a gap reopens depends on its cause. After tooth movement, retainers are an essential part of the treatment rather than an optional extra. Where gum disease caused the drift, the underlying condition must be controlled through gum treatment. Methods are often combined: align first, then finish the small remaining space with composite. Our clinic in Muratpasa, Antalya is open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
