Cleaning Under a Bridge: The Step Almost Everyone Skips

The lifespan of a bridge is decided by what happens underneath it. A step by step guide to superfloss, interdental brushes and water flossers.

You cannot clean under a bridge with ordinary floss, because the pontic is joined to the crowns on both sides and there is no gap to slide the floss down through. The floss has to be threaded horizontally underneath, which is what superfloss and floss threaders are for. Skip this step and plaque accumulates on the surface where the pontic touches the gum, leading to inflammation, odour and decay on the abutment teeth.

Why it matters so much

The area where the pontic meets the gum is sheltered from brush bristles and poorly washed by saliva. Biofilm there first causes redness and bleeding, then gum recession. Once the gum recedes, the crown margin is exposed and the root surface of the abutment tooth becomes vulnerable. Most bridges are replaced not because they broke, but because the teeth holding them decayed.

Using superfloss

  1. Push the stiff end sideways into the space between the pontic and the gum.
  2. Pull it all the way through so the floss now lies under the bridge.
  3. Bring the thick spongy section into the space.
  4. Press the floss against one abutment surface and move it up and down.
  5. Repeat on the other abutment and along the underside of the pontic.
  6. Remove the floss sideways, never upwards.
  7. Do this once a day, ideally in the evening.

Interdental brushes and water flossers

If the space under the bridge is wide enough, an interdental brush is faster and cleans better than floss. Choosing the right size matters: a brush forced in will injure the gum, while one that is too thin never touches the surface. A water flosser is excellent at removing loosened debris but does not mechanically disrupt sticky biofilm, so it complements floss and brushes rather than replacing them.

  • Move the interdental brush back and forth gently, not by twisting.
  • Replace it once the bristles splay, usually every week or two.
  • Start the water flosser on low pressure and increase gradually.
  • Hold the tip close to ninety degrees to the gum margin.
  • Aim for brushing morning and evening plus one interdental session.

Common mistakes

The most frequent one is assuming a bridge simply cannot be cleaned and settling for brushing. The second is stopping when the gum bleeds, when in fact bleeding signals inflammation and settles within days of consistent cleaning. The third is using wooden toothpicks, which push the gum papilla back and eventually leave a permanent gap. The fourth is forcing floss against a crown margin when it will not pass underneath.

When to see a dentist

  • Persistent odour despite daily cleaning under the bridge.
  • Ongoing bleeding or swelling at the gum margin.
  • Any movement of the bridge or tenderness on biting.
  • A rough or catching surface at a crown margin.
  • New sensitivity to hot or cold, which may indicate decay on an abutment.

Professional care

However good your home routine is, some areas under a bridge stay out of reach. A professional clean every six months uses specific tips to reach beneath the pontic and check the crown margins, and the same appointment assesses whether gum treatment is needed. Radiographs catch marginal or root decay long before you would feel it.

The lifespan of a dental bridge depends far more on daily care than on how well it was made. One correct cleaning session a day protects the supporting teeth for years. Our Muratpasa clinic handles bridge reviews and professional cleaning.
