How Long Does Bleeding Last After a Tooth Extraction?

Active bleeding after an extraction usually stops within 30 to 60 minutes, while blood-tinged saliva can continue for up to a day. Here is how to tell normal from abnormal.

Active bleeding after an extraction normally stops within 30 to 60 minutes of firm, correctly placed pressure. After that, saliva tinged pink can continue through the first 24 hours, which is expected. A very small amount of blood colours a lot of saliva, so most people believe they are bleeding far more than they are.

Applying pressure properly

What stops bleeding is uninterrupted pressure in the right place, allowing a clot to form. If the gauze rests on the neighbouring teeth instead of the socket, no pressure reaches the wound.

  1. Fold clean gauze and place it directly over the socket.
  2. Bite firmly for a full 30 minutes without checking in between.
  3. Remove it slowly so the clot is not pulled away.
  4. If oozing continues, repeat once with fresh gauze.
  5. Avoid talking, spitting and rinsing during this time.

A moistened black tea bag works well as an alternative, since its tannins help the vessels constrict.

Avoid during the first 24 hours

  • Rinsing vigorously, gargling and spitting
  • Drinking through a straw, smoking or using a water pipe
  • Hot showers, saunas, heavy exercise and bending forwards
  • Hot food and drink; stay with lukewarm, soft meals
  • Probing the socket with your tongue or finger
  • Painkillers with a blood-thinning effect unless your dentist advised them

When bleeding is not normal

  • Bleeding that has not stopped after two separate 30-minute pressure attempts
  • The mouth filling with bright red blood every few minutes
  • Nausea or vomiting from swallowed blood
  • Bleeding that restarts after the first day has passed
  • Bleeding with marked swelling, fever and increasing pain
  • Dizziness, palpitations or unusual weakness

In these situations, waiting is the wrong choice and post-extraction bleeding should be assessed. The dentist can clean the site, place sutures or use haemostatic materials.

Personal factors

Bleeding lasts longer in people taking blood thinners, those with clotting disorders or liver disease, and uncontrolled high blood pressure makes clot formation harder. Tell your dentist about every medication and condition before the extraction so precautions can be taken in advance. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner on your own; that decision belongs to the doctor who prescribed it.

After it settles

From the second day you can rinse gently with warm salt water. Keep brushing, but leave the socket itself alone for the first few days. Mild swelling and bruising are expected and usually start to fade after day three.

In short, bleeding that stops within half an hour is normal; hours of bright red flow is not. Our Muratpaşa clinic offers an on-call dentist 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including after an emergency tooth extraction.
