Broken Tooth: What to Do and Should You Keep the Fragment?

A broken piece of tooth can often be bonded back on. Keeping the fragment moist and understanding how deep the fracture goes changes the result.

Yes, keep the fragment. If the broken piece is intact and has been kept moist, a dentist can often bond it back onto your own tooth. Because it is your own enamel, the colour and translucency usually match better than any filling material. A dry fragment becomes brittle and dull, so the first thing to do is drop it into milk or sterile saline.

How deep is the fracture?

Enamel covers dentine, and dentine covers the pulp where the nerve and blood vessels sit. How far the fracture goes decides both urgency and treatment.

  • Enamel only: no sensitivity, purely cosmetic, an appointment within a few days is fine.
  • Into dentine: sharp pain with cold air or drinks and a yellowish cut surface; it should be sealed soon.
  • Into the pulp: a red dot or bleeding on the fracture surface with severe pain; same-day care.
  • Below the gum line: pain on biting and bleeding; the treatment plan is more involved.
  • The tooth split or loose: a possible root fracture, do not delay.

Storing the piece

Pick it up by the outer surface, rinse briefly, then place it in a clean container covered with cold milk or saline. Do not wrap it in tissue, put it in a pocket or leave it dry in a bag, all of which weaken the edges and leave a visible line after bonding. Collect every fragment you can find and let the dentist decide which is usable. If nothing was found, composite bonding can rebuild the tooth naturally in a single visit.

Before your appointment

Rinse with warm water, and cover a sharp edge with orthodontic wax if it is cutting your tongue or cheek. Chew on the other side and avoid very hot or cold food. Use a cold compress on the outside if the lip is swollen. Do not file the edge down and never try to glue the fragment back with household adhesive, which damages the tooth and can make a proper bond impossible later.

Treatment at the clinic

Superficial fractures are repaired by bonding the fragment or shaping composite. Exposed dentine is covered with a protective base first. If the nerve is exposed, either a pulp-protecting procedure or root canal treatment is planned depending on the age of the patient and root development. Back teeth with large losses may need a crown for strength. Follow-up matters even when everything looks fine at the first visit, because nerve vitality can change over the following months.

No pain, no rush?

Not quite. A blow can numb the nerve temporarily, and exposed dentine gives bacteria a short route to the pulp. Even a painless fracture should be checked rather than left for weeks.

With the fragment stored properly and prompt care, a broken tooth can usually be repaired so the repair is hard to spot. If there is bleeding, severe pain or looseness, a broken tooth emergency visit should happen the same day. Our Muratpaşa clinic provides an emergency dentist service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
