Before seeking a second dental opinion, bring at least four things: recent radiographs, a written plan listing what is planned for each tooth, the materials proposed, and records of previous treatment. Without them the second dentist has to start from zero, repeat imaging and compare nothing. With them, a second opinion becomes a real assessment instead of a general comment.

- Digital copies of radiographs taken within the last six months
- Any three dimensional scan file
- A written plan identifying treatment by tooth number
- The proposed materials: crown type, implant system, denture design
- A history of previous treatment with dates

Questions for your first dentist
Knowing the plan is not enough; ask for the reasoning. Why this option, what were the alternatives, what happens if nothing is done, how many appointments, how long, and what maintenance follows. A well built plan already contains those answers.
How to present your case
Bring the documents and describe your symptoms, rather than repeating the previous dentist's conclusions. That lets the second dentist form independent findings. Be concrete about when the pain started, what makes it worse and how long it lasts.
When the two plans differ
Different plans do not automatically mean one is wrong. A missing tooth can be restored with a bridge, which involves preparing the neighbouring teeth, or with an implant, which leaves them untouched but takes longer and needs enough bone. Ask where the difference comes from: findings, priorities or simply preference.
Extra questions for aesthetic work
For front teeth, ask how much tooth structure will be removed, whether the preparation stays within enamel, and whether you will see a mock up before anything is final. In smile design those details decide how reversible the result is, so they belong in any second opinion. If you are in severe pain or swelling, deal with the emergency first and discuss the definitive plan calmly afterwards.
What a second opinion cannot do
No dentist can reach a firm conclusion from documents alone. A radiograph does not show how much a tooth moves, whether the gum bleeds, or which point hits first when you close. So a second opinion still needs an examination. Collecting a fourth and a fifth view rarely helps either; two thorough assessments usually give you enough to decide on.
