What Is a Mock-Up in Smile Design and Why Is It Done?

A mock-up lets you try the new smile in your mouth before anything permanent happens. Here is how it is made and what it prevents.

A mock-up is a trial version of the planned smile, applied to your teeth with a temporary material before anything permanent happens. The point is simple: you see the result instead of imagining it. You judge tooth length, shape and smile line on your own face, while the dentist checks whether the plan works during speech, smiling and biting. Nothing is irreversible at this stage.

How it is made

It starts with impressions, photographs and any needed imaging. The facial midline, lip movement, how much tooth shows when you smile and the gum level are all assessed. The new shapes are designed on a model or digitally, a template is produced from that design, and the temporary material is transferred to your teeth through it. Within minutes you see the proposed smile in place.

In most cases no tooth is reduced for the trial. The material simply sits on top and is removed afterwards, which makes the mock-up the cheapest possible way to test a plan.

What is being checked

  • Length of the front teeth during speech and smiling
  • Whether the dental midline matches the facial midline
  • The curve of the incisal edges against the lower lip
  • Tooth shape and how it suits the face
  • Speech test with F and S sounds
  • Whether the new shapes interfere with the bite
  • Gum display and tooth width to length proportions

Why it matters

Changing length or shape after permanent restorations are bonded is far harder and sometimes means remaking them. A mock-up moves that decision earlier. It also defines how much preparation is genuinely needed, which protects healthy tooth structure. Skipping this step in smile design can produce a technically sound result that still does not match what the patient pictured.

When it is used

It is routine before ceramic work in the smile zone, including laminate veneers and front zirconia crowns, and useful before extensive composite reshaping. A single back tooth restoration rarely needs one.

If you do not like the trial, that is exactly what it is for. Length, edges and midline can all be adjusted and tried again before production begins. Our clinic in Muratpasa, Antalya is open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
