Some sensitivity in the first days after a crown is expected. Here is which symptoms are normal and which need assessment.
Some sensitivity in the first days after a crown or veneer is expected. Preparing the tooth irritates the underlying tissue, and that settles over days to a few weeks. What is not expected is pain that fails to fade, grows worse, appears on biting, or throbs without any trigger.
Why sensitivity happens
Beneath the enamel lies dentine, which contains microscopic tubules. Preparing a tooth brings the surface closer to that layer, so cold air, cold water and sometimes sweet foods produce a brief signal. The tissue gradually adapts and the symptom eases. Sensitivity is often stronger while a temporary restoration is in place, because it insulates less well than the final one.
What counts as normal
- Cold sensitivity lasting a few seconds and stopping when the trigger is removed
- Discomfort that is strongest in the first days and steadily decreases
- Mild tenderness at the gum margin while brushing
- Sensitivity that improves noticeably once the permanent restoration is fitted
Symptoms that need assessment
- Pain that increases rather than fades over the days
- Pain on biting or pressure on that specific tooth
- Spontaneous throbbing pain with no trigger
- Prolonged pain triggered by heat
- Swelling, redness or a blister on the gum
- Pain radiating to the temple, ear or jaw
- Pain that worsens at night and disturbs sleep
Likely causes
Pain on biting most often comes from the crown contacting the opposing tooth slightly too early, so it takes extra load every time you close. That is corrected with a short bite adjustment and should not be left. Heat triggered, spontaneous or night time pain may relate to the pulp, and assessment includes imaging, with root canal treatment considered where indicated. Gum swelling is handled separately through gum treatment.
Sometimes the source is simply an open margin or residual cement, which is easy to identify and correct. Whether the restoration is a zirconia crown or a laminate veneer, only a clinical examination can tell you which applies. Our clinic in Muratpasa, Antalya is open around the clock, seven days a week.
