Booking the whole family on one day is possible. How to order the appointments, choose the time, and make a child's first visit easier.
Two decisions make a family appointment work: book in the morning, and put the child after a relaxed adult rather than last. Seeing several family members on one day saves travel and time, and it makes dentistry feel like an ordinary family routine rather than an event.
Why the time of day matters
Children cooperate far better earlier in the day. An appointment after school or close to bedtime lands when a child is already tired. Mornings also suit adults having longer treatment, while a short review can go anywhere in the day.
Setting the order
- A relaxed, experienced adult goes first while the child watches
- The child goes next, still alert and curious
- The adult having the longest treatment goes last
- With two children, the younger one goes first because waiting is harder for them
- An anxious adult is given the quieter slot after the others have finished
The point of this order is to stop a child learning anxiety from someone else.
Preparing a child for a first visit
- Mention it the day before rather than making it a topic for a week
- Avoid phrases like it will not hurt or there is no needle; children pair those words with fear
- Use concrete, neutral wording such as we will count your teeth
- Do not describe your own bad experiences
- Let them bring a favourite toy
