With braces on, brushing takes longer and interdental brushes plus floss become essential. The right routine prevents white marks appearing when the braces come off.
With braces on, the main difference is the number of surfaces that need cleaning. Brackets, bands and wires create many corners where plaque can settle, so brushing takes longer and a brush alone is not enough. Without a proper routine, permanent white marks around the brackets and swollen gums can appear once the braces come off.
How brushing changes
Clean around each bracket in three passes: angled down onto the top edge, angled up onto the lower edge, then the tooth surface itself. Give the gum margin its own attention, because gum inflammation develops quickly with braces and the tissue can start to overgrow the brackets. Brushing after every meal is the standard, not the ideal.
What you need
- A small headed soft or medium toothbrush
- Interdental brushes for the spaces around brackets
- Floss and a threader to pass under the wire
- Fluoride toothpaste
- A fluoride mouthrinse where the dentist recommends one
Flossing with braces
Flossing is not optional, because no brush reaches the surfaces where two teeth face each other. The floss has to pass under the archwire, which is what threaders and pre threaded floss are for. Once between the teeth, work it against each surface separately. It is slow at first and takes only a few minutes after a couple of weeks.
Foods to avoid
- Hard nuts, unpopped popcorn kernels and ice
- Chewing gum, toffee and sticky sweets
- Biting directly into apples and carrots; cut them into pieces
- Corn on the cob and meat on the bone
- Frequent sugary and acidic drinks
Where white marks come from
Plaque around a bracket produces acid that draws minerals out of the enamel. The early lesion looks like a chalky white patch and can be halted with fluoride and good hygiene, but once it progresses a filling is needed. These marks are difficult to remove afterwards, which is why hygiene matters as much as alignment.
Is bleeding normal?
Slight bleeding usually signals plaque related gum inflammation and settles within days of consistent cleaning. Avoiding the area makes it worse. If bleeding lasts beyond two weeks or the gums begin to overgrow the brackets, gum treatment may be required.
Review visits during orthodontic treatment check hygiene as much as they adjust the wire. Our Muratpaşa clinic is open seven days a week, twenty four hours a day.
