How a rotation works
On-call duty exists so that care stays available on weekends and public holidays. Assignments are published as lists showing which unit or dentist is responsible on a given day, and the next day the name and the address change. Duty usually covers a defined window rather than the whole day, so it is worth checking the current list before you travel.
What is usually done at an on-call visit
- Examination and imaging to identify the source of the pain
- Prescription of pain relief and, where indicated, antibiotics
- Drainage of an abscess and control of infection
- Extraction of a tooth that cannot be saved
- Starting the urgent stage of root canal treatment and sealing the tooth temporarily
- Stopping bleeding and arranging onward care
These steps settle the complaint, but completing treatment normally needs a separate appointment. On-call care is a starting point rather than a treatment plan.
What continuity adds
When the address and the team stay the same, treatment that begins at night continues in the same place, often with the same dentist. Records and X-rays taken that night are reused, you do not have to retell the story, and follow-up visits are booked in the same clinic. If the problem is a one-off, such as throbbing pain that starts at midnight, go wherever you can be seen soonest; not waiting is what matters.
