Choosing between clear aligners and fixed braces depends less on appearance than on how complex the case is and how disciplined the patient can be. Each has its own strengths.
Choosing between clear aligners and fixed braces is not only a question of appearance. Three things decide it: the type of movement the teeth need, how complex the case is, and how consistently the patient can wear an appliance. For simple crowding both work well; for root movement or major space closure, fixed braces still offer more predictable control.
How each system works
With braces, a bracket is bonded to every tooth and the wire running through them applies continuous, directed force that the patient cannot switch off. With aligners, a digitally planned sequence of movements is divided into a series of thin trays, each moving the teeth one small step and changed every week or two. Force is applied only while the tray is worn.
Where aligners work well
- Mild to moderate crowding and closing spaces between teeth
- Relapse after earlier orthodontic treatment
- Adults whose work makes appearance a priority
- Patients who want to avoid cheek irritation from brackets
Where fixed braces lead
- Severe crowding and strongly rotated teeth
- Bringing impacted teeth into the arch
- Extraction cases and large space closure
- Younger patients where consistent wear cannot be guaranteed
Why wear time decides the outcome
Aligners are expected to stay in for around twenty two hours a day, out only for meals and brushing. Even a few missing hours each day can stop the trays seating fully and delay the planned movement. Clear aligner treatment rewards discipline, while fixed braces carry the plan forward regardless.
Hygiene and comfort
Because aligners come out, brushing and flossing continue as normal, which is a real hygiene advantage. Nothing but water should be drunk with trays in place, otherwise sugar and acid are trapped against the enamel. Braces need interdental brushes and threaders. Both feel tight for the first days after a change or adjustment.
The right choice becomes clear after an examination, radiographs and digital scans. Two cases that look identical may need different plans because the roots sit differently. Orthodontic assessment is available at our Muratpaşa clinic seven days a week, at any hour.
