Which dental problems cannot wait and which can? A practical guide to reaching emergency dental care in Antalya at night, at weekends and on holidays.
With dental emergencies, one distinction matters: signs that infection is spreading, bleeding that will not stop and trauma cannot wait, while sensitivity, mild pain and cosmetic concerns can be booked in. Knowing which is which lets you make the right call at two in the morning.
Problems that cannot wait
- Swelling of the face or under the jaw, especially spreading towards the eye or neck
- Toothache with fever
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Bleeding after an extraction that pressure does not stop
- A tooth knocked out or displaced by a blow
- Pain that markedly limits opening the mouth
- Severe pain that painkillers do not touch and that wakes you
Difficulty swallowing or breathing can signal infection spreading to the floor of the mouth and progresses within hours; that needs the nearest emergency department. For the rest, a dental clinic is the fastest route. See our page on a dental abscess.
Problems that can wait until morning
- Sensitivity to hot and cold that stops when the stimulus is removed
- A lost filling or a crown that has come off, with no pain
- A small painless swelling on the gum
- A denture that has broken and cannot be worn
- An orthodontic wire rubbing, with no bleeding
How access changes at night and at weekends
There are three routes in Antalya: units on the published duty rota, which are limited to set hours; private clinics that stay open continuously, with a fixed address and team; and the emergency department where infection is spreading or general health is affected. Demand rises during public holidays and the tourist season, so confirm by phone before travelling. Our page on a clinic open during public holidays covers those days.
Have this ready before you call
- When the problem started and how it has changed
- Whether there is swelling or fever
- The name and timing of any painkiller you have taken
- Your regular medication, especially blood thinners
- Any fragment or knocked-out tooth, stored in milk or saline
Getting there
Traffic is light at night but distance still counts. Central districts reach Muratpasa quickly, while travel time matters more from Alanya, Manavgat or Gazipasa. Call before you set off so you know what to do on the way and so you are expected on arrival. Do not apply heat to the painful side, and if you are bleeding, hold clean gauze with steady pressure for about twenty minutes without checking, since checking disturbs the clot. Our page on bleeding after an extraction explains this in detail.
Children
The most common childhood emergency is a front tooth injured in a fall. The distinction between a baby tooth and a permanent one is decisive here: a knocked-out permanent tooth is time critical, while a baby tooth is not replanted. Bring the child in rather than trying to reposition the tooth yourself; see our page on the emergency dentist for children.
Our clinic is in Muratpasa and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including nights, weekends and public holidays.
