Can a Tooth Be Extracted While Taking Blood Thinners?

Yes. Current practice is usually to continue the medication and control bleeding with local measures, decided together with the prescribing doctor.

Yes, extractions can be carried out for patients on anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication. Current practice for limited procedures such as a single extraction is generally to continue the medication rather than stop it, because the clotting risk of sudden withdrawal can outweigh post-operative bleeding that local measures control well.

Start by sharing your medication list

Bring the names and doses of everything you take, plus any recent blood test results. "Blood thinner" covers very different drugs: some affect clotting factors, others stop platelets sticking together. Why the drug was prescribed matters too, since a heart valve, an arrhythmia and a previous clot do not carry identical risk.

Should the drug be stopped?

That is never the dentist's decision alone; it is agreed with the doctor who prescribed it. For straightforward single-site extractions the medication is usually continued. For extensive surgery, multiple extractions or higher-risk patients the plan may differ. What is asked of you is simple: never stop the medication on your own, and give the clinic complete information.

Local measures used to control bleeding

  • Resorbable haemostatic material placed in the socket.
  • Sutures to bring the wound edges together.
  • Firm, uninterrupted pressure on sterile gauze for 30 to 60 minutes.
  • A supportive mouthwash where the dentist advises one.
  • Scheduling the procedure for a weekday morning so follow-up is easier.

Aftercare

The first 24 hours protect the clot. Do not rinse, use straws, smoke or poke the site. Keep food and drinks lukewarm and soft, and raise your head slightly when lying down. Slightly pink saliva in the first hours is expected and does not mean active bleeding.

If bleeding continues, roll clean gauze, place it directly over the socket and bite firmly for 30 minutes without checking it. If you still have mouthfuls of blood, contact the clinic without delay. See our page on bleeding after extraction.

Aspirin and supplements

Low-dose aspirin usually does not need stopping for a simple extraction. Some herbal supplements and fish oil can increase bleeding, so mention over-the-counter products too, and ask before choosing a painkiller yourself.

Planned properly, this is a safe procedure. See our pages on emergency tooth extraction and oral surgery.
